HOW A PAINTING IS DESIGNED

This example is an illustration from Ivanhoe in which Isaac begs the Grandmaster to spare the life of his daughter, Rebecca.

Step One - Thumbnail Sketch
Ideas that are created in the imagination are first expressed visually in thumbnail sketches. These pencil drawings are rarely larger than 1 1/2 inches in either dimension. They are often created in less than one minute. Yet they are the most important steps in creating a painting because they show the basic composition and break up of dark and light values in the finished art to follow.
